A Study on the Various Levels of Cancer-associated Antigens in the Neoplastic and Non-neoplastic Disorders

Abstract
On the metabolism of cancer cells, there is synthesis of certain molecules not expressed in healthy cells, or enhancement of normal minute synthesis of such components. Cancer associated antigens belong to these groups of neo-antigens, have been used to diagnosie or monitor substance before and after treatment of various neoplasms.
Out of the broad spectrum of various cancer associated antigens, only alpha fetoprotein (AFP) and carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA) have gained major attention in laboratory mdicine. These are called oncofetal antigens because of their occurrence in fetus as well as in malignant growth.
And often some neoplastic condition may produce hormonal substance, so called ectopic hormone. Among them, human chorionic gonadotrophin(hCG) is a glycoprotein usually found in high concentration in the serum and urine during pregnancy. But recently, it has been found not only gestational trophoblastic disorder but also nontrophoblastic neoplasm such as bronchognenic cancer, lymphoma, colorectal cancer and melanoma.
Once, SP1 was thought to be a pregnancy specific N1-glycoprotein synthesized in syncytiotrophoblastic cells, regarded to a good monitoring substance of fetal well being. Now, its high levels are confirmed in malignant conditions as good as trophoblastic disease.
This study about CEA, AFP, JHCG and SP1 in 157 individuals various conditions was perforemd for the purpose of the observation how significantly they would appear or increase in neoplastic conditions.
The results represent as follow:
1) The cancer associated antigens are significantly higher positive rates in the patient with adenocarcinoma(94%) than non-adenomatous cancers (61 %).
2) In non-neoplastic condition, a few cancer associated antigens could be found, especially in benign liver disease, but there are low serum level and less positive incidence without combined elevation.
3) Hepatobiliary cancer and gynecologic malignancy produced at least one more cancer associated antigens with high combined elevation.
4) The highest positive incidence of SP1 was in gastric cancer(77%), AFP was in hapa-
